ABOUT footwear's Innovation Engine & think tank
Why The Footwear Industry Established the FIF
Footwear companies today are increasingly forced to address immediate challenges, leaving little room to explore innovative solutions that meet latent demand or develop transformative operations and business models. The Footwear Innovation Foundation was founded in 2023 to bridge this gap – bringing new ideas, real innovations, and unique talent to the industry.
Who We Are
The FIF isn't just another group. We are the industry. Founded by footwear leaders, we are the platform and community where innovators, entrepreneurs, academics, and executives work together to shape the future of footwear.
What We Do
We serve as a platform to explore transformative ideas, accelerate breakthrough technologies, and collaboratively build the future of footwear. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we provide the guidance, resources, and connections that innovators and entrepreneurs need to turn ideas into impact.

To champion inventive solutions for pervasive industry-wide challenges – benefiting footwear consumers and companies, creating jobs, and building a stronger footwear industry.

From Idea to Impact: Our Innovation Approach
Adapted from George Heilmeier’s original framework, these are the questions the Footwear Innovation Foundation uses to evaluate footwear ideas and proposed innovations.
- What are you trying to create or solve?
Explain your idea or goal clearly and simply—no footwear marketing jargon. - How is this done today, and what are the limitations?
Describe the current industry standard or practice. Where does it fall short? - What’s new about your approach, and why might it work better?
What’s your breakthrough, and what makes you believe it will succeed? - Who will care, and why does it matter?
Who benefits—brands, consumers, manufacturers? What meaningful impact will your innovation have? - What are the risks or unknowns?
What technical, commercial, or adoption hurdles do you foresee? - What resources will you need?
Estimate costs, time, tools, people, or partnerships required. - What’s your timeline?
How long will it take to develop, test, and bring this to life? - How will you measure success along the way—and at the end?
What benchmarks, prototypes, or feedback will show progress and proof of concept?
- What are you trying to create or solve?
How we are doing it

Supporting and mentoring innovators, entrepreneurs, and academics to fast-track innovation and bring transformative ideas to life.

Facilitating collaborative research to drive innovation and solve industry-wide challenges.

Funding and launching projects to validate and bring innovative ideas to fruition.

Democratizing knowledge by sharing findings and making results accessible to everyone.
Guiding principles for how we operate
- Promote Broad Impact – Prioritize initiatives with potential applications across various footwear categories and with the greatest number of consumers as possible.
- Deliver Meaningful Impact – Emphasize solutions that bring significant value to both consumers and industry stakeholders.
- Have Clear Objectives – Develop and select projects with well-defined goals and tangible deliverables over ambiguous endeavors.
- Embrace Practical Applications – Focus on addressing specific needs within the footwear industry rather than adopting generic cross-industry trends.
- Adopt a Merit-Based Approach – Collaborate with individuals and organizations based on their ability to contribute to future innovation, prioritizing merit over financial backing or institutional affiliations.
- Democratize Findings – Commit to sharing our research publicly to spur on new entrepreneurial solutions.
- Cultivate New Minds and Critical Thinking – Increase the development of fresh perspectives and critical thought inside – and encouraging thought leaders outside – the industry to focus on new footwear applications.
- Harness Every Good Idea – Recognize the value of worthwhile projects, even if they cannot be immediately pursued, by documenting industry needs and encouraging entrepreneurship to address them effectively.
